Madonna and Guy Ritchie settle child custody case

Of all the issue that come up during a divorce — alimony, child support, division of assets — perhaps the most contentious is child custody. After all, both parents love their child and want to spend as much time as possible with him or her. Emotions run high as both parties try to come to an agreement that suits them and is in the best interests of the child.

This holds true for every divorcing couple, whether it's the neighbors down the block or A-list celebrities. If you keep up with celebrity gossip, you've probably seen the headlines about the very public child custody battle between Madonna and ex husband Guy Ritchie. The two have traded barbs over Twitter and Madonna even broke down on stage because of the turmoil.

After nearly a year of strife, though, the couple has come to an agreement regarding the custody of their 16-year-old son. No details have been released about the agreement or who the child will live with, but sources are indicating that the fight is over.

Of course, in child custody cases, there are no "winners" and "losers." The focus should always be on what is best for the child and oftentimes that means putting aside your ego and working toward a compromise.

If you and your ex spouse are working out the details of child custody, it can be invaluable to have an attorney by your side. He or she can fight for an outcome that works for you and will help ensure that you get quality parenting time.
