Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver settle divorce

In 2021, there were many celebrity divorces that surprised people around the country. Among them was a high-profile divorce between Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The two, 66 and 74, finalized their divorce over a decade after they separated.

This divorce is a good one to talk about because it shows how to stay out of the public eye while going through a separation. The divorce was mediated by a private judge, allowing the ruling to be entered into the Los Angeles court system without a public trial.

Complex assets make some celebrity divorces more complicated

In this situation, the divorce proceedings were allegedly slowed down by how complex the property settlement agreement was. It is estimated that the marital estate was valued at around $400 million. The divorce was further complicated by the claim that Schwarzenegger had cheated on his wife in 2011. In May of that year, reports claimed that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with his housekeeper.

Child custody issues may not have been a problem in this case, but it may have been part of the delay. The two have four children together, ages 28 and older, who may have needed to be part of the divorce had it been finalized sooner.

If you want privacy, mediation and arbitration may be helpful

If you’re in a similar situation and want to retain your privacy while divorcing, working through mediation or arbitration with a private arbitrator or judge may be a good option. When you settle your case privately, you are typically able to minimize the amount of information about your case that goes public.

This can be particularly important for people with many assets or for those who want to protect their reputations throughout a divorce case.

Taking time apart may help your divorce end smoothly

There is also something to be said about separating for a longer period before settling. By working out your separate lives first, you can minimize conflicts regarding how you want to divide your marital property. Seeing what you do need from the marital estate may be simpler once you fully separate out your separate assets.
